Play dough has become an all time favorite in our house. And there truly are endless possibilities of activities that can be done with it.

Whether you have store bought play dough or homemade, either is so much fun to manipulate and learn with.
Homemade play dough can seem daunting as there are so many recipes out there. But no worries, if you’re up to it, we have a tried and true playdough recipe that works great.
Play Dough Color Learning Activity for Fine Motor Skills
This play dough activity is a great hands on and tactile way to work on both fine motor skills and color recognition with your toddlers.
And bonus it only requires 2 supplies you probably have lying around at home.
To Create Your Own Play Dough Learning Colors Fine Motor Activity You’ll Need:
- play dough
- pony beads
Pony beads are great for activities, as well, hence why I have so many.
This Rainbow Bead Counting Activity is a lot of fun, too. Perfect for practicing those fine motor skills while learning to count.
For this fine motor skills activity, grab a small amount of a few different colors of play dough and beads that match those colors.
We chose to do rainbow colours as we had all the colours in our closet.
If your kids are anything like mine, they will love doing rainbow activities as my girls are completely enthralled with rainbows.
Learning Colors Fine Motor Skills Activity with Play Dough
First, have your child roll each color of play dough into a ball.
This in itself is great fine motor skills practice and a perfect time to start identifying the colors you will be using for the activity.
Then give your child a container or plate of pony beads that match the colors of the play dough you are using.
For toddlers who are not super familiar with their colors yet you can choose not to mix them up.
For older kids mix up the beads.
This is the part where the fine motor skills get involved in this learning play dough activity.
Now, have you child match the colored beads to the play dough and push them into the balls.
Use this as an oportunity to talk about the colors while they do them by naming them.
Many toddlers will try to tease you by putting the bead into the wrong color. This is a great time to keep it all positive and just name the play dough and bead colors.
Like, “Oh look, you put a yellow bead in the red play dough. Is that where it goes?”
Manipulating the beads is amazing fine motor skills practice. This activity is great for that.
I must say that even my eldest child, who is seven, joined in. Even though this activity was simple for her to do, she absolutely loved it.
Not only was it enjoyable for the kids to push the beads into the play dough, but also to take them out.
We actually had a few beads go flying across the room. Wow, did this ever make them giggle!
Definitely an activity win!
