Rainbow ice sensory play is so much fun for all ages!
This ice sensory play is easy, low prep and will keep your little one engaged and busy for quite some time.
My little one has been very interested in colors, especially the colors of the rainbow.
I knew that adding in a little ice sensory play would make this activity so much fun for her!
To Prep This Rainbow Ice Sensory Play,
You Will Need the Following Supplies:
- Ice Cube Trays
- Water
- Liquid food coloring or water colors (I used food coloring, and would recommend food coloring if you have children who still mouth items.)
To prep the ice, I added the food coloring to my trays before adding the water. I found it easier this way and less messy.
I added 2 to 3 drops of food coloring per cube in the tray.
Next filled with water but careful not to fill too high so the colors don’t get mixed up.
I then put them in the freezer overnight!
Activities that you can prep ahead of time and have on hand when needed are my favorite.
Here is another easy activity using food coloring that you can take outside during the winter using snow!
Rainbow Ice Sensory Play Activity
Once my ice cubes were frozen, I added them all into a tray.
We organized them from top to bottom in the colors of the rainbow.
This isn’t something you have to do but my little one has been very interested in the organization of the colors of the rainbow.
I added a bowl of water, a few pipettes or eye droppers, and a spoon for her to explore with.
A Few Other Items That You Could Add to Enhance Play:
- A set of tongs to pick up the ice.
- Try adding cups for scooping and transferring too!
- Turn sensory play into art by having some paper to paint on with the ice cubes. You could even draw a rainbow outline and color it in with the ice.
Speaking of sensory play, this is another idea on our list for a sensory play using all the colors of the rainbow.
My little one spent a few minutes admiring and naming the colors.
She then quickly used the water and pipettes to melt the ice cubes.
This brought the colors out even more!
She loved the blending and mixing of the colors together!
Thirty minutes was spent on this rainbow sensory play just sitting and melting the ice, making new colors as she went along.
It was such a simple, yet such an engaging process for her!
There are so many different ways that you could play with this rainbow ice sensory bin.
I love that it can be used inside on colder months and taken outside during those warmer months!
