Who knew sugar cubes could be so much fun! Tower building, painting, mixing colors, making rainbows, and messy play are all activities that you can create with sugar cubes!
I was walking the aisles in the grocery store, one day, when a box of sugar cubes caught my eye.
“Hey, I bet my kids could use these to build towers!”
I knew my girls would love it!
I put the box in my cart and continued on.
However, I got to thinking that I didn’t want to buy a box a sugar cubes just for tower building. So as I continued shopping my brain was going a mile a minute trying to think of other ways that sugar cubes could be used in an activity.
Well, I must say, by the time the rest of my shopping was done, I had come up with a few different ideas.
So, I bought the box and was super excited to see what we could do!
Sugar Cube Towers Activity
Yep, the simplest activity that you can do with sugar cubes is build towers.
What kid doesn’t love to build towers? Mine sure do!
I’m always trying to think of different ways to build them. Besides wooden blocks there are actually so many other supplies that you can use to build towers.
I gave my girls a box of sugar cubes and a cookie sheet (to help with the sugar granular mess) and let them explore.
Towers were exactly what they started to build!
My oldest instantly started to build like a pyramid and my youngest just went straight up with the sugar cubes.
So of course, my youngest’s tower wasn’t very stable, so hers would fall over and she would just giggle.
It’s really quite intriguing to watch a child’s thought process while they are building towers. And this sugar cube tower activity was no exception.
Colored Sugar Cube Painting Activity
Another activity that you can do with sugar cubes is to paint your towers different colors.
To do this, mix up some water with food coloring or liquid watercolors in a few small containers. Add an eye dropper to each dish and see what your child can create.
I just love how this activity turned out with the tie die rainbow colored sugar cube affects!
Mixing Colors with Sugar Cubes
Another cool activity to do with sugar cubes is to explore mixing colors.
Red + Yellow = Orange
Red + Blue = Purple
Yellow + Blue = Green
Sugar Cube Rainbow Activity
Who doesn’t love rainbows?!
My girls are always wanting to make rainbows.
Absolutely, why not! Rainbows are beautiful!
My girls used the color mixing sugar cube activity to create primary and secondary colors and made their own sugar cube rainbows.
Look at this! They’re gorgeous! I love them!
Messy Play
As much as the sound of the words, ‘messy play’, can make you cringe, we sometimes need to try to let go.
Kids absolutely love messy play!
Put an art smock or an over-sized T-shirt on your child and let them go at it.
Yes, I must admit, I started to cringe when my children started to go crazy with the watercolors and sugar cubes in their activity.
The dissolving sugar cubes were becoming one huge mess.
They were mixing, stirring, scooping, dripping it all over.
I had to let it all go and I’m so glad I did. My girls had so much fun!
So, what are you waiting for….go grab a box of sugar cubes and have some fun!
Your kids are sure to love it!
