Buttons are a lot of fun for children and just picking them up is great fine motor practice.

They are also amazing for crafts and simple activities like this fall tree .

However, what about the actual life skill of learning how to do up a button?

Unfortunately, this dexterity skill seems to get forgotten for children.

But how do you help your children learn to button?

This is why I’ve come up with a super simple manual buttoning activity for kids to practice this fine motor life skill.

And the bonus, there’s no sewing involved in this felt button board activity DIY!

If you’re anything like me, just the thought of the word ‘sew’ makes me nervous.

No-Sew Felt Buttoning Board Fine Motor Activity

To create your own no-sew buttoning board kids activity, you will need:

Supplies need to make your own DIY no sew buttoning board activity for young kids.

Step-By-Step How to Create a Buttoning Board Activity with Felt

Start with the one full size sheet of felt.

Now add a small amount of glue to random spots and place a button on it.

Use hot glue to attach buttons to a sheet of felt.
Quick and simple no-sewing buttoning board for toddlers and preschoolers.

Next, cut some small felt pieces.

You can get fancy and cut shapes or flowers out of the felt to make a button garden or color matching twist.

I chose to keep it quick and simple with felt squares.

Cut piece of felt in any shape you want.

Finally add a small slit in the middle of each piece of felt, just big enough for the button to push through.

Cut slits in your felt pieces to button onto the buttoning board activity you made.

Get Toddlers and Preschoolers Learning Buttoning Skills

Now your manual buttoning board activity is ready!

Have your toddlers and preschoolers button up the small pieces of felt.

As you can see, my daughter just went with it and I’m happy she did as she definitely needed practice with this fine motor dexterity skill.

At first, I thought she was actually matching up the colors of felt pieces with the buttons but she wasn’t.

However, that being said, why not!
