Buttons are a lot of fun for children and just picking them up is great fine motor practice.
They are also amazing for crafts and simple activities like this fall tree .
However, what about the actual life skill of learning how to do up a button?
Unfortunately, this dexterity skill seems to get forgotten for children.
But how do you help your children learn to button?
This is why I’ve come up with a super simple manual buttoning activity for kids to practice this fine motor life skill.
And the bonus, there’s no sewing involved in this felt button board activity DIY!
If you’re anything like me, just the thought of the word ‘sew’ makes me nervous.
No-Sew Felt Buttoning Board Fine Motor Activity
To create your own no-sew buttoning board kids activity, you will need:
- felt pieces and one full size felt sheet
- medium-sized buttons
- a glue gun
- scissors
Step-By-Step How to Create a Buttoning Board Activity with Felt
Start with the one full size sheet of felt.
Now add a small amount of glue to random spots and place a button on it.
Next, cut some small felt pieces.
You can get fancy and cut shapes or flowers out of the felt to make a button garden or color matching twist.
I chose to keep it quick and simple with felt squares.
Finally add a small slit in the middle of each piece of felt, just big enough for the button to push through.

Have your toddlers and preschoolers button up the small pieces of felt.
As you can see, my daughter just went with it and I’m happy she did as she definitely needed practice with this fine motor dexterity skill.
At first, I thought she was actually matching up the colors of felt pieces with the buttons but she wasn’t.
However, that being said, why not!
That’s a great idea for our next learning activity!
Button practice and color practice all in one! For sure!
Give this button and colour matching activity a try! Your kids are sure to love it, too!
Buttoning is actually a really tricky skill for children to learn and it takes a lot of practice.
So once your toddler or preschooler is finished for the day, put it away.
But don’t be afraid to pull out your buttoning board activity again and again.
Pop it in a pencil case box and grab it for on the go! Fine motor skills in a box!
