Check out this cool colored jelly bean experiment that turns into an exciting eye dropper painting activity!
Who knew there was such a thing as a jelly bean experiment?
Believe it or not, there are actually a lot of fun activities to do with jelly beans.
They are bright, colorful and taste great, too!
So why not have some fun with them! (Of course, sneak a couple in as a snack while you’re at it.)
We actually have a cute saying, that we sing every time we see them.
“Jelly, jelly, jelly beans, in my belly, belly, belly beans!”
Jelly Bean Color Experiment
To create your own Jelly Bean colour experiment, you will need:
- jelly beans
- 6 small containers
- water
To add on to the fun afterwards with our painting activity, you’ll also want:
- wax paper
- eye droppers
First, have your child sort the jelly beans by color.
For some reason, my girls love sorting activities. It’s just something they will instantly start doing. So, why not include that in our color experiment with jelly beans! I let them go at it.
We chose 6 colors (the colors of the rainbow) to sort out.
My girls seem to have a fascination with rainbows. However, I must say, I don’t blame them. I do, too! I actually had a rainbow wedding!
Rainbows provide a bright and inviting environment to play in. Life would be boring if everything was black and white.
Next, we counted 10 jelly beans of each colour.
Learning to count can be so much fun as it can naturally be added into so many everyday activities, such as climbing stairs, eating snacks, counting body parts, playing with blocks or toy trucks/cars and even reading stories.
However, if you’re looking for even more practice, check these number activities out. They are a lot of fun!
Beginning the actual jelly bean experiment
Next, we placed each color of jelly beans into separate containers and added enough water just to cover them.
I gave the girls a tablespoon to measure and pour the water. They loved this!
Let’s be honest, they love anything to do with water.

A lesson in being patient!
Next, set the jelly beans aside leave them overnight.
It may be helpful to snap a photo of the jelly beans when you start, to compare what happened to them later.
Ask your child what they think is going to happen to the jelly beans as you’re waiting. They might surprise you with their answers.
The anticipation was really hard to handle for my girls. They were really excited for this!
Then, the next morning, we compared the before and after of the jelly beans and we talked about what happened.
This experiment was exciting however, the fun wasn’t over yet! I had something else planned for the the jelly bean water.
Experiment turned into Jelly Bean Colored Water Painting!
Wax paper drop painting!
Grab a piece of wax paper and an eye dropper and let your child experiment with the jelly bean water.
Using eye droppers are great for fine motor practice.

My girls thought this was really cool.
They made multiple designs and pictures.
I actually gave them a paper towel to clean their surface so they had more room to make a new ones.
You could also make a twist on this and drop the colored water onto paper towels as well, instead of the wax paper!
That would be a fun experiment to see how it differs and absorbs into the paper towel versus sitting on the wax paper and beading up.
So much fun was had and it lasted a long time. Definitely a win!
Who knew you could paint with jelly beans, especially after an exciting experiment!
