Kids of any age can enjoy making this easy construction paper art project since you are only painting with water! Get creative and have fun.
My kids are one, four, and seven.
Their shared interests include mooching cookies, trying to all cram on my lap, and dancing to musical sensations such as “Everybody Poops.” (It’s a real song. Thank you, Spotify.)
So, finding activities that they all enjoy is about as easy as figuring out why anyone thought the world needed a song about the general population’s um, bowel movements.
Anything with water is sure to be a big hit at any age, though, right?
This one-minute prep paint with water activity uses just a few basic supplies and kept them busy for quite a while.
The water soaks into the construction paper to create magical art drawings!
Paint with Water Construction Paper Art
To have your own fun painting with construction paper and water, you will need:
- construction paper
- small cups to hold water
- paintbrushes or sponges
- writing utensil (optional)
- towels for clean up and minimizing the mess

Paint with Water for the Littlest Kids
I gave the baby a few brushes, a small cup of water, and some paper, and let him go to town!
This was a great sensory experience for him and also gave him fine motor practice holding onto and manipulating the brush.
He also enjoyed slurping water off of the brush as he painted. Perhaps I should fetch him a cup.
He is at the age where everything is used to make a mess (he draws on himself daily with markers) so something with water was the perfect no-mess activity for him.
Paint with Water for the Older Kids: Learning with Water
The activity began a little more structured for my two older kids. I gave my four-year old a series of letters to trace to practice his handwriting and letter formation.
I gave my seven-year old a series of addition and subtraction problems to solve.
Painting with water instead of using a pencil was the twist that kept them engaged as they practiced these otherwise typical skills!
Fun for Kids of All Ages: Open-Ended Construction Paper Art
After they finished their learning activities, my kids started playing around and creating in their own ways.
They painted their names with water.
They figured out that fully soaked paper sticks together without glue or tape!
I made my four-year old some patterns to trace.
When his big sister saw it, she requested one too.
My daughter soaked small pieces of paper and used them as a stamp.

They also experimented with different ways to get the water on the paper. Splattering was a big hit.
As with any indoor water activity, I was not surprised when water started getting dumped, dripped, and splashed onto the surrounding area.
A few towels nearby made clean-up quick and easy.
