This pom pom push fine motor activity is so simple and easy to take with you to keep busy toddler hands occupied!
We recently completed a road trip to the Outer Banks in North Carolina.
This meant an almost 12 hour drive with no stops, so I knew I needed to be prepared with car activities!
The older kids are easy, but entertaining a 17 month-old in the car is no simple task.
At this age, they would much rather be emptying kitchen cupboards and splashing in the dog’s water bowl.
Therefore, being strapped into a carseat all day is not going to be super fun for any toddler.

My one year-old’s favorite car activity this time was this simple busy pom pom push, made with only a cardboard egg carton and some pom poms.
Really, it could not be easier!
This activity was perfect for supervised use in the car, but is also great when you are just hanging out at home and need to keep your little one busy.
As always, you know your child best.
If their first inclination is still to put everything in their mouth, you might want to hold off on this one until they are more interested in the “pushing” feature!
Pom Pom Push Fine Motor Activity for Toddlers
To Make Your Own Busy Activity, You’ll Need:
- pom poms (medium size works best)
- a cardboard egg carton
- a pen or something similar to push holes into the carton
Preparing Fine Motor Pom Pom Push Activity
First, make the holes in the egg carton by pushing a capped pen through the bottom of each egg holder part of the carton.
A cardboard egg carton is best for easily pushing holes into it, but you might be able to make a styrofoam carton work.
Next, gather your pom poms.
I found that medium sized pom poms, or at least not super small, worked best.
They are easy enough to stuff through the hole.
And since the pom poms were larger than the holes I poked, there was just enough of a challenge to make for a satisfying push from my toddler!

Finally, let your toddler play with their new activity!
Of course, keep watch to make sure the pom poms aren’t being tested out as a tasty treat.
This pom pom push kept my daughter busy for at least 20 minutes at a time in the car.
This might not seem like a lot, but anyone with a toddler knows that 20 minutes on a single task is a big win!

She loved playing with it at home, as well.
