Why Play Marbles with Monster Trucks?

I would like you to know that I am NOT old enough to have lived through the era where playing Marbles was a popular game.

In fact, I don’t think I have actually EVER played the real game.

I did, however, collect marbles. I assume it was because my parents liked to frequent antique stores, and marbles were a small and inexpensive toy for me to pick out on each trip. Smart!

My boys love playing with the marbles. Chinese checkers (they just fill all the holes), rolling them through wrapping paper tubes, using them to earn rewards, etc.

One day, I looked up how to play the real game. I decided it would be more fun for my boys to play with cars and trucks.

Let's play Monster Truck "Marbles"

Try Monster Truck Marbles out – I’m willing to bet your parents will enjoy playing it with the kids! (Cue the song “Memories”.)

Let’s Play Monster Truck Marbles!

If you’re playing outdoors like we did, draw a big circle with chalk. This is your Marbles “arena”.

If you’re playing indoors, then you can use some painter’s tape to make a big shape – I’d probably go with a square or octagon because tape circles are HARD. HAH! It’s best to do this on a smooth surface.

Put all the toy cars into the arena. Spread them out a little.

Each player receives one monster truck as their “shooter marble”.

Take turns driving the monster truck into the arena, releasing the truck BEFORE it crosses the line.

The Object of Playing Monster Truck “Marbles”:

The goal is to have the monster truck knock the cars OUT of the arena.

Any car knocked completely outside of the playing circle is then collected by that player to their own personal “junk yard”, and it becomes the next player’s turn.

Cars half-in and half-out should remain in the arena until someone completes the knock-out.

Once all cars have been knocked out of the arena, players count their own junk yard. The player with the most cars wins!

the object of playing Monster Truck Marbles is to knock the toy cars out of the circle and collect them in your own "junk yard"

When you’ve had enough of Monster Truck marbles, use those cars and trucks with these other five activities.

The Official Rules of Marbles

There are so many ways to play the REAL game of marbles, but some rules you could consider adding if you have older kids include:

  • Play for Keeps: Kids can play their friends and put in their own cars. You keep the cars you knock out. Make sure the kids are old enough to understand this idea and that all are in agreement. It’s risky with kids!
  • Your turn continues until you fail to knock out a car. (As opposed to just taking turns back and forth after each shot.)
  • Decide who goes first by lagging. Draw a line on the ground. Everyone rolls their monster truck towards the line. Whoever gets closest goes first.
  • Call Your Shots. Announce which car you plan to knock out of the arena. You only get to take the car you called.

Tell me, have you ever played classic Marbles? If so, what rules did you follow?
