Names are a big deal for little kids. Use this activity to help them “build” their name.

Set Up Name Tracing with Blocks (or Stickers, or whatever!)

To start, grab a large piece of paper, poster board or even some cardboard and write your child’s name as large as you can.

Side note to consider if your child has a long name: I chose to focus on tracing the first three letters of my daughter’s name because Jenevieve is so long.

Secure the paper in place with tape to prevent it from sliding during the activity.

Initially, we tried using MegaBlocks for this name tracing practice, but my daughter became easily distracted.

Instead, set it aside for the day and we explored other engaging block activities.

Add Variety

The following day, I presented my daughter with various options such as blocks, buttons, and other toys. She enjoyed selecting items to cover her name with.

We began with flat wooden blocks, reciting the name and sound of each letter of her name as we traced it.

Use blocks to create letters

After using the blocks to create the letters, Jenevieve wanted to use buttons for more name tracing, which required more precise fine motor skills.

I assisted her with some of the smaller buttons, ensuring all the letters were covered.

Taping the paper down was crucial as it prevented any accidental shifting of the buttons. She kept bumping the paper and the buttons would shift before I secured it.

Extend the learning

At this point, Jenevieve was really eager to use markers to continue name tracing.

I allowed her to choose a color and directed her to write the letters of her name in order, starting at the top.

She loves using anything that writes and took delight in tracing her name multiple times using different colored markers.

I was amazed at her ability to follow the lines of her name, tracing them accurately.

Of course, then she colored the remaining space on the paper! Adding her own creative touch to her name tracing practice.
