Is Christmas a big deal in your house? I love making memories with my kids around the holidays.
Christmas is my favorite holiday because it reminds me of my childhood!
Growing up, we would wallpaper the whole house with Christmas wrapping paper, make fragrant pomanders with oranges and cloves, and bake cookies with my mom.
I love creating those moments with my kids as well!
This year, we made a super simple Christmas tree shapes craft.
It’s so cute and festive to look at, but it also teaches shapes for your toddler or preschooler!
Christmas Tree Shapes Craft for Toddlers and Preschoolers
For this Christmas tree shapes craft, you’ll need:
- Construction paper
- Scissors
- Glue
- (Optional: Crayons, markers, glitter)
Cut the Shapes for Your Christmas Tree and Decorations
Before we started, I cut some shapes from construction paper.
You can have your child help with this if you’d like her to have some extra fine motor practice.
I cut the following shapes for our Christmas tree craft:
- jumbo green triangles
- a black rectangle
- red circles
- yellow squares
- and a big yellow star

Make the Christmas Tree With Triangle Shapes
First, help your child make the tree.
We layered the green triangles on top of each other so that they looked like tree branches starting at the bottom.
A great idea is to only put glue in the middle so that the tips of the branches can still move and flap up a bit.
Next, we added the black or brown rectangle for the trunk.
Tips for Teaching Triangle & Rectangle Shapes
To teach shapes, just name each shape as you glue it down to make your Christmas tree.
Talk about it’s features, and trace and count the sides.
I like to teach triangle by emphasizing the syllables in the word. “Tri-an-gle. One, two, three.” Three syllables, three sides!
For rectangles, I trace the sides and say “Long, long, short, short. Long, long, short, short.”
Let your child practice tracing the sides of the shape as she repeats these phrases.

Decorate Your Christmas Tree With Small Shapes!
Now it’s time to decorate the tree!
Grab those small circle and square shapes and let your child get creative with her Christmas tree!
Sometimes it’s hard to get glue on those tiny pieces of paper.
TIP: If you’re child is struggling, try setting a damp cloth to the side. Have her press one finger on the damp cloth, then onto a tiny shape.
This will help those little fingers grab the shape more easily!
Tips for Teaching Circle and Square Shapes
To teach a circle, we made up this little phrase while we traced the outline, “Circle, circle, round and round.”
For the small squares, try repeating this while you trace the sides, “One, two, three, four. Just a square and nothing more.”
It seems silly, but using as many senses as possible really helps little ones remember and retain information more easily!
Finish With a Star on Top
Finally, we glued the big star shape on top of our Christmas tree!
This time we counted the points of the star, “One, two, three, four, five. Hello, star, shining bright.”
