Last week the first spring flowers in our yard popped through the ground and bloomed.

And my preschooler then went on to pick them for me.

Those flowers inspired this activity which mixes color matching with a simple spring flower craft that brightens up the house (without picking my only flowers)!

I did this activity with my preschooler.

But this would also be a great craft and activity to use for exploring colors with toddlers too.

You could even leave out the glue and use it as a fine motor activity alone instead of a craft.

Teaching colors to your kids can be fun and done through a variety of simple crafts, color sensory activities and even color mixing science experiments.

What You’ll Need to Make Your Own Color Match Flower Craft for Preschoolers:

  • buttons or pom poms in various colors
  • construction paper in the same colors of button (or pom poms)
  • scissors
  • school glue

Here is How to Prepare Your Spring Flower Color Matching Activity for Kids

First thing you will need to do is gather your supplies working with the colors you have available.

Next, simply cut various shapes of flower petals from construction paper.

No need to complicate this activity.

Use what you have on hand: buttons, pom poms, dot stickers, stamp it with a bingo dauber, etc.

And you definitely don’t have to be an artist! Any shape of flower petals you come up with using construction paper will look lovely.

The Flower Petal Color Matching Activity and Craft

I invited my preschooler to do this spring flower color matching activity with me.

He made one flower at a time.

Start out by sorting one color onto the paper and then glue it all down. This is excellent fine motor skills practice for little ones

First he glued on a red colored button.

And then collected and sorted all the flower petals that matched the color of the button.

Before gluing, he wanted to arrange them around the button first.

All of these steps are excellent for developing fine motor skills in your kids.

And then he glued each matching colored petal one by one onto his flower craft.

(Try to keep out of this part and let your little ones fine motor skills and creativity take the lead. You will all be so proud of the result! And your toddlers or preschoolers will build confidence too.)

He repeated that process with every color of flower, matching each color petal to the button center until his craft was complete.

As a finishing touch, he wanted to draw green stems, leaves, grass (and roots!) for each flower.

Teach preschoolers colors with this simple hands-on spring flower color match activity and craft that is so easy to do at home with your kids.

I think the result turned out magnificent! Perfectly imperfect, I believe.

This color matching activity is simple enough for teaching at home.

But I also think this color matching flower craft would be great for preschool classrooms during a garden theme, spring time, or even summer camps!

If you enjoyed this color matching flower craft then you’ve just gotta try our slightly harder collage version next!
