To make your own 2D LEGO drawing, you’ll need:
- LEGO bricks
- cardstock or art paper
- markers or crayons
- scissors
Whether your favorite LEGO character is Emmet, or you’re a Ninjago or Star Wars fan, you can adapt this LEGO drawing tutorial to whatever bricks you have on hand! It’s super simple!

Step by Step to Build & Create with LEGOs
First, have your child build an awesome LEGO creation on their own. My son built a robot, but it could be anything!
It can be with DUPLO LEGO blocks, or the smaller LEGO blocks. Ninjago LEGO sets or Star Wars LEGO sets. Your own creation with the bricks you have on hand or a LEGO set! Anything goes here.
Seriously, let them go nuts and build literally anything. No restrictions except their own imagination.
Create a LEGO Drawing from what you built!
Then, it’s time to transform the sculpture or creation from 3D to 2D!
I love this LEGO drawing idea precisely because it’s so simple and creative.
It doesn’t have to be super realistic or even look just like what your child made.
My son placed his LEGO robot beside his drawing paper.
Then, he sketched out the blocks and shapes with markers, recreating the robot in 2D form.
How do you draw a simple Lego?
Interpret it how you like! It doesn’t have to be exact for this LEGO drawing activity.
Don’t expect to have drawings of Ninjagos that you recognize from a preschooler!
We started with markers right away, but you might also suggest a pencil outline at first. Then trace over it with markers once everyone is happy with the drawing.

Next, he filled in the whole shape of the drawing with colors.
Let your child’s imagination take the lead. There’s no right or wrong way for your kid to create your LEGO drawing!
It can be as simple or detailed as they like.
You can always ask them if they see details in their block build that they don’t see in their LEGO drawing.
Does Batman have on a mask? What is the Ninjago holding? What color of pants does Emmet wear? Is Captain America red or blue? Does the minifigure have hair or not?
