How do you celebrate New Year’s Eve with kids?

New Year’s Eve at my house always involves numerous balloons, a full day of activities for the kids, and ends with a slumber party in our living room.

It’s become our annual tradition!

Of course, you do not have to do a full day of activities to celebrate New Year’s Eve with kids!

Keep reading to find a few things that may work for your family’s next New Year’s Eve celebration.

New Year’s Eve Activities Balloon Pop Countdown Preparation

My daughters and I create a list of activities we would like to do on New Year’s Eve a few days ahead of time.

The Night Before New Year’s Eve I Gather These Supplies:

  • New Year’s Eve list of kids activities
  • a bunch of balloons
  • paper
  • a pen
  • a permanent marker

I prioritize the activities – ones we definitely want to do and others that can be done if we have time.

Then, I write each of the activities on strips of paper.

The activities I know we will want to do go inside of the balloons one at a time.

As soon as I put a strip of paper into a balloon, I blow the balloon up and write a time on it.

(Sometimes I record what activities are in each balloon on a separate piece of paper. But not always. It definitely isn’t necessary!)

Balloon Pop New Year’s Eve Activity Countdown

My daughters take turns popping the balloons as our countdown on New Year’s Eve at the time written on them.

Yes, we start our balloon pop countdown with an 8 AM balloon. “Get dressed and do morning chores.”

Apparently it’s more fun to do chores when you get to pop a balloon first!

The strips of papers with the extra New Year’s Eve kids activities get folded and placed into a small bowl.

Nothing fancy!

One of the morning balloons in the countdown always says to do activities from the bowl until it is time to pop the next balloon.

These are nice fillers to do throughout the day.

I make sure to include some activities my kids can do on their own on New Year’s Eve too. I need to get a break at some point!

Having time for us to all rest during the day is also helpful (especially if we are going to stay up until midnight).

I used to tape the balloons to a wall. Now, I just throw them all on the floor. So simple!

(Balloons can be a choking hazard. Please supervise kids with balloons.)

My daughters try to sort them by time, so they know when they need to pop the next balloon.

Great practice with telling time! (8 AM is the morning balloon but 8 PM is the night balloon.)

Even though they help create a list of activities, they don’t know which activity I put in each of the balloons.

It’s always a fun surprise!

Some Activities We Tend to Do Every New Year’s Eve Include:

  • decorate a gingerbread house (using a pre-made kit)
  • play at least one game
  • read at least one book
  • decorate plain shirts (or hats or shoes) with fabric paint
  • do at least one additional craft
  • put together a small puzzle
  • write New Year’s resolutions (and look at ones from the previous year)
  • play with a toy
  • look at old photos
  • set up an air mattress in our living room
  • watch a movie (at the end of the night to wind down)

If they manage to stay awake until New Year’s Day, they pop the final balloon in the countdown at 12:01 AM. “Good night…I mean, Good day! Happy New Year! Time to sleep.”
