Make rainbow art with cotton balls and let your toddler or preschooler engage those fine motor skills while being colorful and creative.
Spring is approaching and so is St. Patrick’s Day and the first thing that comes to my mind is rainbows.
Rainbows are so colorful and beautiful. My girls and I absolutely love them!
Rainbows are truly a favorite of mine.
In fact, my bridesmaid dresses in my wedding were all the colors of the rainbow. It was so much fun!
Rainbows have this little piece of magic in them that make people smile!
Everyone is always excited to see a rainbow.
So of course I just had to come up with this cotton ball rainbow art project.
Cotton Ball Rainbow Art
To create your own cotton ball rainbow art activity, you will need:
- white cardstock paper
- cotton balls
- eyedropper
- glue
- liquid water colors (or food coloring)
- 6 small containers
- a cookie sheet or pan
Setting up Cotton Ball Rainbow Art Activity
First, draw a rainbow with markers on the cardstock. This will be a guide for your child to follow.
Be sure to draw the lines of the rainbow far enough apart for cotton balls to be glued on each row.
Next, add a few drops of each color of watercolor into separate containers.
I added about 4 drops. If using food coloring instead, use the same process.
Then add some water to each.
Next, place your cardstock rainbow into a cookie sheet or pan just to avoid a big mess to clean up.
Fine Motor Rainbow Art with Cotton Balls
Now you are all set up and it is time for fine motor fun.
First, trace glue over one color of the rainbow and place cotton balls on it.
Depending on the age of your child they can do this part on their own.
Tracing glue lines is amazing for fine motor practice.
Next, ask your child which color of the rainbow they just covered.
Once they identify the correct color give them that corresponding colored container.
Using a eye dropper, squeeze the liquid watercolors over the cotton balls.
The cotton balls with absorb the liquid colors to create your rainbow.
It was such a cool process to watch.
Using eye droppers takes a lot of fine motor skills and kids absolutely love using them.
Why not give this fun fizzy experiment a try for more eye dropper fun!
Repeat this process for each color of the cotton ball rainbow.
My daughter really enjoyed this activity as she spent about 30 minutes on it.
I really love how this activity turned out. The colors are gorgeous.
The process of this activity was enjoyable and exciting for both of us.
Watching my child problem solve during this rainbow art with cotton balls activity was amusing.
It was definitely a learning curve for her as she had to figure out how to adjust the eye dropper according to how much liquid she wanted to come out.
Yes, there was times where the liquid spilled over but that added to the fun!
Rainbow, Rainbow, Colorful and Bright, Bringing excitement to all in sight.
