Time away with your hubby or significant other on Valentine’s Day is so special, but family fun time to celebrate Valentine’s Day with the kids has its place in this special day, too.

While I LOVE celebrating the season of love my MY love, I also cherish creating special hands-on memories with my boys.

Sometimes, it’s hard to know how to celebrate Valentine’s Day with kids, but it doesn’t have to be – there are a lot of fun ideas you can choose from.

I remember one Valentine’s Day we created the cutest Valentine vases by upcycling plastic creamer bottles and Epsom Salts. Yep, Epsom Salts strike again, I know! But Epsom Salts are a great way to upcycle and craft, and in such a large quantity bag, you’re bound to have extra.

We colored the Epsom Salts pink, red, and purple, and glued the salt all over the bottles. Add a pretty ribbon, and you have an instant vase for flowers. These upcycled vases look so pretty and give your whole family an awesome hands-on Valentine with you – and help your husband know what to give you for Valentine’s Day. Win-win!

But, seriously, Valentine’s Day is as much about the little loves showing their heart as it is about you and your spouse showing yours. Why not make the day a little extra love-ly (see what I did there) for everyone!

A Little Valentine’s Day Breakfast to Celebrate

My husband is a baker (yes, a legit actual baker and our family owned bakery), so every year he created me a special danish coffee cake in the shape of a heart.

I love when the donut shops come out with heart-shaped sweets around the day of love. What a perfect time for a special breakfast! Plus, it’s super easy. Head to your local bakery (and give them some loving support)!

One year my boys took donut hole Valentines for their classmates, but you could easily adapt them just for a special Valentine’s Day for your family.

This is a great opportunity to grab my printable here.

Pair it with some warm hot chocolate, and you and your family are off to a very special start to the day.

A Heart-felt Dinner

Head to the dinner table for quality time… a heart-shaped homemade pizza is one of the best ways to do Valentine’s dinner with the family!

Grab some premade dough from the store and toppings, and let your kids help shape their individual pizza dough into a cute heart. Then top and bake.

Ta-da! Another fun memory in the making for the rest of your family members!

In our house, Valentine’s Day is all about the hearts.

Why not make special Valentine’s Day heart sugar cookies? Or buy some premade ones to decorate if you don’t have time to bake.

These snacks are healthy and cute! Everyone deserves to feel special with a little Valentine treat.

But, celebrating Valentine’s Day with kids is about more than the food.

Be sure to include some fun crafts, activities, and Valentine cards, too, because everyone wants to participate in the big day.

Not sure where to start?

Check out my Valentine’s Crafts and Activities for Kids.

There are so many craft and activity ideas in there you’re bound to find just the right fit for your family. But if you need a bit more inspiration, I’ll share some of my favorites.

I Love You Scavenger Hunt

The I Love You Scavenger Hunt is by far my absolute favorite activity I’ve done with my boys for Valentine’s Day, it’s so much fun.

For the Valentine’s Day scavenger hunt, I cut hearts from paper from the local craft store and wrote words of love for each child on each heart.

Then each day, I hid the hearts around the house for my boys to find in the days preceding Valentine’s Day.

Each day, as they found their hearts, I would give them tape for the hearts to put on their bedroom doors. It was so special and fun; you have to try it!

One art project my kids absolutely loved doing was our heart cookie cutter art for Valentine’s Day.

Dipping candy hearts shaped cookie cutters in red paint and stamping them on a sheet of paper creates such a simple but special Valentine.

My boys loved being able to use paint, and although it was a bit messy (I’d recommend having the kids wear old shirts or smocks), the result was gorgeous!

Edible Valentines to Celebrate Valentine’s Day

As I mentioned already, fun food really makes Valentine’s Day that much better! So why not create some yummy edible Valentines.

I loved anything with frosting as a kid, especially frosted graham crackers, and my boys liked this idea, too. So, we frosted graham crackers, added a candy conversation heart to each and enjoyed sharing them with everyone we love. You can even do this with your favorite sugar cookie recipe!

Remember the Reason to Celebrate Valentine’s Day with Kids

One thing to remember as you try to figure out how to celebrate Valentine’s Day with kids, simple ideas make a special time:

Kids don’t need anything super complicated and it’s a wonderful opportunity to spend time with them. They just want to know that you love them, and they want to share that love in return.

Making ways to create memories together as a family could be as simple as a special meal, homemade cards, and some delicious, easy edible Valentine’s.

This holiday is all about helping your kids say, “I love you,” and saying it yourself, too.

Hope you have a fantastic Valentine’s Day as you get hands-on together.
