Making art with kids can be challenging. The time, the mess, the clean-up — it can be overwhelming!
But it doesn’t have to be this way.
When I make art with my kids, we focus on the process, not the product.
We choose simple materials we have on hand. And we don’t take ourselves too seriously!
Creating together is a great way both to build relationships and help your kids develop. Art helps your child succeed in traditional subjects, such as math, literacy, and problem-solving!
Create Together with 5 Simple Watercolor Techniques
We experimented with a few fun watercolor techniques to create a landscape painting.
I did this project with my two-year-old daughter, and I was amazed at how these simple tips helped her explore art in a new way!
So this is a great watercolor painting project for toddlers, preschoolers and all ages of kids!
Before you begin, set up your painting station. Having all the materials ready to go will allow your child to explore and create independently.
Your child can follow the techniques in order as we did, or use these fun ideas to create their own original masterpiece.
Remember that art is all about the process and the journey. Every child’s art will be different, and that’s OK!
Use this easy art activity for kids as a jumping-off point for your child’s imagination!

What are the different watercolor techniques for kids to learn?
Watercolor technique 1: Crayon Resist
The first watercolor technique we tried was crayon resist. We scribbled white crayon on the lower third of the paper.

Then we painted over the crayon with green watercolor paint.
This combination created the perfect grassy texture for our landscape!

Watercolor Painting Technique 2: Splatter Painting
Next, we had fun with splatter painting. Load a large amount of water on your brush, then dip it in a color.
With really wet brushes, tap the brush over your fingers to splatter the paper. I added a few more larger flowers on my painting as well.
Watercolor Technique for Kids Tip 3: Watercolor Wash
Creating a watercolor wash is a fundamental watercolor skill.
First, take a clean brush and load it will clear water. Paint the water over a large area.
Then you can drop in large amounts of color from your brush.
You’ll love the way the color quickly spread over a large area! We used the wash technique to paint the sky.
Watercolor Painting Technique 4: Salt Texture
Next, try adding texture with salt! Sprinkle table salt over a wet paint area. The salt soaks up the paint and creates a beautiful texture effect!
A great use for this watercolor technique is to add in stars or fairy dust.
Watercolor Painting Technique 5: Plastic Wrap Texture
Finally, give plastic wrap a try! There are two fun ways to use plastic wrap in this easy art activity for kids.
For a subtle texture, dab crinkled up plastic wrap on wet paint. Remove quickly before the paint dries.
For a bolder look, crinkle up plastic wrap and lay it on your painted area. Wait for the paint to dry completely, then remove the plastic wrap. You’ll be left with a beautifully random pattern!
Here are our finished paintings! This easy art activity for kids uses the simplest materials and processes to create a stunning result.
