Spring has finally sprung!
The weather is warmer, the sun is shining, the snow has melted and soon there will be flowers growing.
We are all so excited over here!
To create even more enthusiasm for Spring (even though we already have lots), we have started doing flower crafts and activities.
My girls absolutely love flowers!
Not only are they beautiful in a vase, giving off a sweet smelling aroma but they are amazing to incorporate into kids activities.
From planting flowers and watching them grow, exploring their different parts, picking them (of course) and even creating gorgeous Mother’s Day gifts, flowers are extremely versatile.
Colorful Fine Motor Flower Activity
Believe it or not, flowers can also be an amazing tool to practice fine motor skills in an activity.
To Create Your Own Fine Motor Flower Activity, You’ll Need:
- plastic spoons
- a small piece of styrofoam or a log of play dough
- small colorful hair clips or small colored clothespins
Quick Activity Set Up
The styrofoam block that we had on hand was actually one that is used to make real flower arrangements and it can get quite messy so we placed it on a cookie sheet.
I first used a skewer stick and and punched a few holes in the block so that it wouldn’t be as difficult to stick the spoons in.
We chose to use green spoons but any colour will work.
We just thought green for the stem would be great.
Fine Motor Flower Activity in Action
First have your child place the spoons in the styrofoam block.
Next have them attach the hair clips to the outside of the spoons to create flower petals.
Pinching those little clips over and over again was amazing for fine motor practice.
Look at that pincher grasp. Crazy!
If your child happens to find it a little tricky to open the small clips then a great substitute would be clothespins. Give it a go!
For even younger kids doing this flower activity, full size clothespins may be better for their fine motor skill level.
You can also try this with large ladles or wooden spoons!
Fine Motor Flower Patterns
At first my daughter just randomly attached the clips but as she continued she got creative with her designs.
She even started making patterns.
Then she commented on how beautiful her flowers were.
She thought they were the best flowers ‘ever’ because they were so colorful.
“Look Mommy, I made a rainbow flower!”
Her excitement was so precious!
She has an extreme passion for rainbows, hence her enthusiasm for her special flower.
If your child loves rainbows too, here are some more simple prep rainbow activities.
Go ahead and get excited with your kids and create some beautiful flowers.
What kind of flowers will you create?
Randomly colored, patterned, a layered affect… Let’s see what you can do!
