Take your read-aloud time to a whole new level with this super fun book-based abstract art activity.

We love mixing different activity types together. One of my favorites is to combine reading with art!

This abstract book-based art project is inspired by the popular children’s story called “The Dot” by Peter H. Reynolds (affiliate link).

Kids can enjoy creating their own abstract art based on the art shown and demonstrated in this wonderful story. This art project inspires a love for reading and an appreciation for abstract art.

Plus, it’s great for families with two or more children. Everyone works independently, making taking turns super easy.

Once you have gathered your supplies, cuddle up on the couch or at the table and enjoy reading “The Dot” together.

Practice story retelling by pointing out the main character Vashti, the type of paint she uses, and the style of artwork that she creates.

Next, try out these three approaches to story retelling.

When you’re finished reading, encourage your child to take on the role of Vashti as they create their own dot painting.

If your little artist wants to paint more dots like Vashti, grab some paper and roll with it.
