This garland craft is so cute and simple using scrape painting art techniques that are simple enough for toddlers and preschoolers to enjoy creating!

Paint is a universally guaranteed hit in this house.

Just last week, we got new couch cushions for our back deck furniture and the kids spent hours painting the boxes in which those cushions were delivered.

This is, of course, a significant improvement over the time my three year-old painted the back of the indoor couch.

Can I get a round of applause for washable paint?

You can also use leftover cardboard for a garland craft with this fun art adventure: scrape painting!

Toddlers and preschoolers will have a blast making lovely scrape art and then crafting it into a beautiful and sparkly garland to decorate for any holiday or occasion.

With scrape painting art, you put a few dabs of paint on the surface of your choice.

Then, you scrape the paint around with a piece of cardboard.

No brushes required!

To Make a Sparkly Scrape Painted Garland Craft, You’ll Need:

  • cardstock
  • paint
  • small rectangles of cardboard
  • ribbon or yarn

How to Make Scrape Art Garland Craft

First, cut your shapes out of the cardstock.

You can also upcycle some empty cereal boxes if you don’t have cardstock!

I traced a lid to get a circle shape, but you can make these any shape you want.

Next, put some dots of paint on the cut cardstock.

You are free to let the kids choose any colors they want for their garland craft.

But, complementary colors will blend the best when scraped together.

I recommend keeping it to 2 or 3 colors for the scrape art if you don’t want them all to turn brown.

Then, let your kids begin scraping the paint with a rectangle of cardboard.

You might want to cut several cardboard scrapers so that they can use a new one for each circle, just in case the new colors won’t blend well.

Before the paint dries, you have the option of sprinkling on a conservative amount of glitter.

Conservative amount, of course, is recommended, but if mountains of glitter makes your heart sing wildly with joy, then by all means, layer it on.

If, on the other hand, the thought of glitter + children gives you heart palpitations, skip this step.
