A No-Prep Pom Pom Fine Motor Activity for Toddlers
This activity was inspired by my toddler’s love of putting things into containers and taking them out again.
Stuffing pom poms into a water bottle?
She loves it.
Slipping popsicle sticks into a box?
She loves it.
I’m always on the hunt for similar activities that hold my toddler’s attention while strengthening her coordination, problem solving, and fine motor skills.
No prep or low prep activities are always a plus, especially on a busy homeschooling day!
The idea for this one struck as I picked up a pile of wet gloves off the floor, and came together quickly using materials from around our house.

For this pom pom fine motor activity, you will need:
- Gloves or mittens
- Materials for filling, such as:
- Pom poms
- Cotton balls
- Crumpled paper
- Poly-fil
- Dry beans or rice
- Tongs, tweezers, scoops, and funnels (optional)
For our simple activity, we used pom poms, poly-fil from an old stuffed animal, and some ripped newspaper.
You could make this activity into an even better fine motor skill workout by encouraging your child to rip and crumple the newspaper themself!
Filling Gloves with Pom Poms and More!
For this fine motor activity I encouraged my kids to fill their gloves with materials like pom poms, newspaper, and poly-fil.
When my toddler first spotted the bins of materials, she dove right in for a sensory experience.
She took some time to squish the poly-fil, crinkle up the newspaper, and scoop up the pom poms.
Our oldest daughter joined in to show Clara how to fill the gloves with the different materials.
The pom poms proved to be her favorite material in this fine motor activity.
They were the easiest to work with.

This activity gave Clara’s fine motor and problem solving skills quite a workout!
She was challenged to hold the glove open with one hand while carefully maneuvering the materials into it with the other.
In the future, I’d love to try this activity with our sensory rice bin or with tongs, scoops, and funnels to make it more of a challenge!
From Fine Motor Skills to Pretend Play!
After my kids finished filling their gloves with pom poms, they launched from a fine motor activity right into pretend play!
Apparently, the filled gloves look just like 5-legged octopuses! Who knew?
