My daughter is 2 years old and completely obsessed with owls.

I mean, who isn’t? They are fascinating and so cute looking!

When it comes to an activity with Maisie I usually lean towards cute crafts and fine motor.

Quite different from my son when he was 2 and it was all about gross motor, trucks and messy play!

Not that Maisie doesn’t love all those things too. Believe me, she can do anything her big brother can do.

I’ve been looking around for owl craft ideas with the cold weather coming on soon.

There are so many cute ones out there.

I saw this super cute idea on YouTube but it was way too complicated for my 2 year old.

So I went ahead and simplified it using supplies we had at home already and let my daughter choose what to use.

Fine Motor Pinecone Owl Activity

For me this was the best part and it’s also the majority of the pinecone snowy owl craft.

I set the pinecone and jar of cotton balls down on our coffee table.

(Did I mention this craft is pretty much mess free! That’s right, you can do it in the living room.)

I told Maisie we were going to make owls out of pinecones but we needed to fill all the holes in with fluffy soft feathers.

I showed her one time how to pull apart the cotton balls and push the pieces into the holes of the pinecone.

She went right to work!

At first I held the pinecone and suggested holes to give her the sense of what she needed to accomplish.

I was also careful to only let her choose one pinecone so she didn’t feel like this was an impossible task of filling ALL the pinecones in the basket.

My little toddler carefully picked each cotton ball.

This was a great sensory moment for her too reaching into the tin and pulling one out.

She would pull pieces off just like I showed her.

And then she would push the cotton bits into the holes on the pinecone with her tiny fingers.

Eventually she took the pinecone away from me and went independent with her fine motor snowy owl craft.

This activity kept my 2 year old busy for almost 20 minutes!

All I had to do was encourage her and point out a suggestion now and then when she thought it was done.

After a while she had the entire pinecone stuffed with cotton and ready to be turned into a snowy owl craft!

Boy was she excited!

Turn Your Pinecone Fine Motor Activity into A Snowy Owl Craft

First I sat down a few options for eyes and let me toddler choose what she wanted to use.

Maisie chose the giant yellow buttons.

Next I cut two oval wings out of the white felt sheet and drew a bunch of little u shapes to make them look like feather wings.

I cut a small beak out of the black felt.

I plugged in my hot glue gun and attached the eyes, beak and wings.

I could have made it more complicated by adding feet or eyebrows.

But I wanted to make it simple enough that my toddler could help glue them on and get to see the finished project before she got bored.

Maisie helped me push the buttons and wings on her pinecone snowy owl craft but I operated the hot glue gun, of course.

The finished product was just so cute!

My toddler was absolutely in love with her snowy owl!

And the best part is that she actually made it herself!

She hugged, kissed and pet her owl.

Maisie also kept telling that it was “so cute” and “so soft too!”

Not exactly sure how a snowy owl craft made out of a pinecone can be soft.

We made one new owl each day for three days.

Every time she played quietly working with the cotton balls and pinecone.

We used a variety of eyes as the week went on. I think the white buttons and googly eyes is my favorite!

But the yellow button snowy owl is always her favourite!
