This no-prep letter sounds activity was inspired by the children’s book A B See by Elizabeth Doyle.

This cute little book has beautiful illustrations of each letter of the alphabet.

Unlike your average beginning alphabet book, though, the letters in this book are made out of objects that begin with the featured letter sound.

Cool, right?

Creative No-Prep Letter Sounds Activity

For your own creative no-prep letter sounds activity, you will need:

  • A house full of stuff and some kids. I know, it’s a difficult thing to ask.

One of the great parts about this alphabet activity is that is requires neither specific supplies nor any preparation ahead of time.

All I did was tell my kids that their job was to build letters out of objects that began with that letter, and off they went!

Don’t miss all of these simple alphabet activities for preschoolers!

We made a bunch of letters.

Here is my two year-old lounging on P is for pillows.

I encouraged them to just wander around the house and look at everything until inspiration struck.

S is for spoons!

For younger kids, try drawing the letter nice and big on a piece of paper.

Then, they can trace the letter with the objects, like my two year-old did with C is for cars.

A few other letter sounds that we thought of but did not make: Q is for quarters, B is for books, E is for erasers.

Really, the possibilities are endless with this everyday object letter sounds activity!

If you are stuck on a particular letter, think outside the box.

W could be formed out of all white objects, for example.

I’m not sure what you’d do for X unless you have access to, say, an x-ray machine. Shucks! We were all out of x-ray machines this particular morning so didn’t attempt X.

H is for hats!

I think this activity would be ideal with kids just learning how to read and form their letters.

It was a little abstract for my 2 year old, but he still enjoyed helping his older siblings collect objects and make the letters.

Other ways to form letters out of everyday objects:

  • For younger kids who aren’t ready for letter sounds, just form the letters out of objects without worrying if the first sound is a match, kind of like this LEGO name activity.
  • Write the letter on a piece of paper and have your child “trace” it with objects.
  • Make a child’s complete name. J is for jewelry, A is for apples, C is for coins, K is for kittens. (I advise against the use of real live kittens.)
  • Make letters outside using found nature objects.
  • Instead of making a bunch of different letters, make as many of the same letter as you can, using different objects.
  • To reinforce the same letter, make the same letter in various rooms around the house and have your child go around and find them.
  • Form numbers using that number of objects! A nine made out of nine socks, for example.
  • This activity could be done while waiting at a restaurant. How many letters can you form using the sugar packets, for example?
