Practice spelling your name with a giant connect the dots game that keeps your preschooler hopping, twirling, and bouncing!
My toddler was sleeping.
My preschooler was stuck at home because we have a flu in the house so can’t visit anywhere.
It’s raining and windy outside.
My son was busting with energy and starting to turn to me as his climbing structure.
Any of this sound familiar?
Charlie has recently gotten really good at spelling his name and loves to show it off every chance he gets!
I knew I needed an activity for him and suggested a name craft in hopes it would calm him down.
He was not interested.
So I quickly came up with this super simple jumping game to connect the dots using himself to spell his name!
Bonus, you only need 3 supplies to pull this off.
Giant Spell My Name Connect the Dots Jump Game
For this Name Spelling Game You’ll Need:
- Cupcake liners
- Painter’s Tape
- Marker
Setting Up Giant Spell Your Name Connect the Letters
To start I flattened out 4 liners for each letter of my preschoolers name.
To keep things simple I just worked on one letter at a time and kept them in little piles.
I used a big black marker to write the letters on the cupcake liners.
And personally I went with 4 possible options for each letter, but you can do however many you want.
With a bigger room you could increase it for sure!
Next I taped down all the beginning letter dots around the outside edge of my space.
This gave Charlie 4 jump starting points to pick from for spelling his name.
This also ensured he would try the activity at least 4 times for optimal energy output!
Next I started to fill in the space with all the next letters of the name in order.
And I also made note to have the letter within jumping distance of the preceding letter, but not in a straight line.
You don’t need to be too cautious with where the letters are after the first 2 or 3 since there are enough of them that at least one will be close enough.
I used a painters tape I have tested on my floors and know never leaves damage. Even when left on for weeks.
That’s it!
Your giant connect the dots jumping game to spell your name is ready for some preschooler fun!
Playing Spell Your Name Connect the Dots Hop Game
First thing I did was tell Charlie I spelled his name all over the floor.
Next I challenged him to find a ”C” and see if he can connect his name by hopping from dot to dot!
Charlie assured me this would be easy and he could definitely spell his name!
And so he did!
He jumped from one dot to another connecting the letters of his name over and over!
We had some falls and spills.
Which seem to be an occupational hazard of being a preschooler.
And we had a ton of laughs!
Mix it Up to Extend the Learning and Play
Charlie was having so much fun connecting the dots, spelling his name, and jumping all that energy out!
I decided to add some variations and challenges to extend the play!
Change HOW You Connect the Letters
Can you do it hoping on one foot without falling over?
What would happen if you jumped backwards instead of forwards?
Try jumping to the farthest of each letter you can see.
Can we roll to the letters on the floor?
Change WHAT You Spell
What other words can we spell with the letters in your name? Chair, car, ear, hair, heal, rice, call, etc.
This one excited him and he waited in anticipation to hear from me what letter comes next to spell this new word.
This time spin from letter to letter to connect your name.
Spinning may not have been the best option however.
We noticed it tore many of the letter dots off the floor.
So our next one was to tear each letter off to spell your name!
We truly had a blast playing this giant connect the dots to spell your name jumping game!
My preschooler felt very confident and proud of himself by the end of our play time.
And I loved watching him master spelling his name along with getting out tons of pent up energy!
