This super simple stacking and nesting activity is a Montessori style activity using measuring spoons to learn about biggest to smallest.
What is Montessori Style Learning?
Montessori learning is a way for children to learn with hands-on materials that are generally self checking.
That means they really only work one way.
While this can mean expensive (yet useful) items, it doesn’t have to be.
If you are looking for more ways to work on stacking items, check out this post with lots of ideas.

Measuring Spoons Nesting Activity
Enter the humble measuring spoon set.
I have multiple sets of measuring spoons since I enjoy cooking.
One day I needed to occupy my two year old so I could get some things done without so much help.
I laid out two sets of spoons with different shapes and asked her to stack them back up.
She started by finding two measuring spoons that had the same shape and nesting them together.
She easily put one inside of the other.
Then she found a third spoon and tried to fit it inside the others.
When it didn’t fit as quickly, I asked her if she could try it a different way.
After some maneuvering and a little coaching, she had all the measuring spoons of one shape stacked.
The second set went much quicker!
As we talked through how to make the spoons fit together, I used simple questions to help her think it through.
Since the idea was to keep her busy as long as possible, I refrained from intervening and simply talked about how to make it work.
She eventually got all the measuring spoons from each set stacked.
She was so proud of herself!
Since doing this nesting activity together, she will often go get out a set of spoons and play with them on her own.
This is a wonderful way to introduce concepts of larger than and smaller than as well as spacial recognition.
If you don’t have multiple sets of measuring spoons one set will work just fine.
Using measuring cups might be a good idea with younger children.
This allows them to easily grasp and stack since they are larger.
